Q: In a gamification system that encourages “offline,” interaction and networking, how do you track behaviour?  Through peer reporting? Through Self reporting?  Or — do you skip a step and track behaviour on the next step?

Steve: I would ask first what is the behavior (a participation type behavior – i.e. attendance or compliance behavior, or something that is meant to illustrate something else). That answer will set forth how “accurate” this tracking and recording needs to be.

Generally, you want to record whatever you can. At things like at events (an offline behavior) we have previously integrated with technology (badge scan or even had manual entry that can record this). For consumer events like concerts, you can ask someone to go the extra step and take a picture of a ticket stub or photo from the event. Self reporting is the most difficult to track, and dependant on how motivated the user is (i.e. are they only hurting themselves like in the case of reporting an exercise program vs. employee function).

Q: Do you recommend pilots for early adopters as an implementation strategy?

Steve: This depends on time frame of the pilot.  I think you need a longer period of time to assess success or gain insights. Normally with a pilot, sample sizes, scope and time period are all smaller so there is less time to observe behavior, analyze and tune. As a result if possible I recommend running the program for a longer period of time.

Q: How do you combat drop off when participants (the lower 70%) see that they have no way to catch up with the leader?
Steve: There are multiple answers to this. The question mentions only one type of program here (a competitive scenario). In that example changing time frames for update (from all time to daily, weekly, monthly would help with a user’s perception of their standing). Adding additional ways they can “be in the lead” could also help along with possibly setting up sub competition (i may not be the best computer programmer but I am in the top ten in Javascript programming)
